At first you see this program called Science Coop on your course planning sheet, and you wonder, what kind of course is this?
Then Mrs. Matsabushi goes on to explain what the course consists of, science, planning, and work experience all combined into a double block class. It turns out, there is much more to it.
At first when you walk into the classroom, on the rainy, yet somewhat exciting, third block of your second semester, you automatically know that this class is much different than any other you have ever taken. Yes, the desks are round.
But as the class begins, you notice all the different types of people in that class. There is a person from every type of group, and the class is filled with diversity. As Mr Pye begins to speak and introduce the course, starting with a thrilling story of one of his 20439587 jobs, you begin to realize what value this course might really have.
The best part of this course is not the science or planning, it is the work experience and character development that you can benefit most from. This course will undoubtedly have the potential to help you plan your future. That is, if you make the most of it. This applies to many aspects of the course: Many opportunities will rise, but if you don't use the chance to seize them, it will be as if they never even existed.
Before this course, I never really believed much in volunteering. At times, I thought it is probably a waste of time that you don't even get paid for. And at times, that is even true. But what Mrs. Giraud has to offer you through this course is much more than just that.
Mrs Giraud, the work experience facilitator at Sutherland Secondary, is great at helping you find the right work experience placement for you, one that could help you learn a lot about yourself, your future, and about your possible career paths. Yet it all does depend on how badly you want to do it. It can either be a waste of time you get four credits for, or a use of time that benefits you, which will also get you four credits. Volunteering has a special way of being able to get you to experience almost any job, since an employer does not feel burdened by having to pay you. This allows you to fully be able to explore as you wish.
Another important aspect of this course is the journalling you have to do every tuesday morning. It might seem strange at first, you might wonder whether you are in a science class or in an English class, but in the end you will realize its importance. At first, everyone seems a little hesitant to express their thoughts in front of classmates they might not feel comfortable with. Yet as the school year progresses, classmates learn to trust, respect, and feel more comfortable around each other. This is a great method of allowing us, as students, to finally bring about the confidence to fully express our thoughts. It really is a great learning experience, not only expressing yourself, but also appreciating others' way of thinking.
Yes, the course does have its ups and downs, as any other course, but in general, if you want to make the most out of your grade ten year, you will take this course. If you want to succeed in it, you will. If you want to grow, mature, and learn about both yourself and others, do not hesitate to fill out the sign up form and tell us how you can benefit from it, because every student has the potential to gain from it.
